Having problems with the 5250 while baling. I'm getting the trans filter light, the check transmission light as well. I just changed the transmission filter ten hours ago.

There is definitely something pulling down on the engine when I use the 2nd and 4th gear on the power shift. In fact just setting still in nuetral, if you cycle through the power shift, 2nd and 4th pull down on the tractor. trans oil is up on the level, but smells a bit hot. I have never gotten a temp light, but this problem just started last night.

Finally get hay ready to bale after waiting a week, and now the tractor is going to die.

Anybody got any quick fixes? Hydraulic pump? Filter full of filings?

On the right side of the transmission at bottom is the transmission oil temp sensor and if you pull the plate off that it is in there is a strainer behind it that might be worth cleaning to see if that helps.  The oil has to be drained to pull the strainer out but otherwise it's just 2 bolts and a gasket.

Those transmissions are pretty well designed so the powershift can't be in two gears at once, the pressure switches and electronics are there to protect for that very reason but if the right sealing ring on the transmission shaft was leaking I suppose it could be possible.  There are pressure ports on the transmisson valve body where you could check the transmission pressures, I think it takes a 7/16" o-ring fitting if I remember right but the next step would probably be checking the pressures to see just what is happening.

If by chance it is the powershift and it needs rebuilt the good news is that it only takes about $1,500 in parts and if a guy knows what he's doing it's about a day and a half job to rebuild the powershift on them.

My vote is for a leak in the powershift. Engine pulling down is the clincher. jfqc

thanks for the insight. dealer pretty much told me this morning that it would have to be split to fix anyway, so he didn't think I would hurt it any worse to just run it in the good gears (1st and 3rd). I changed the filter this morning and picked up an extra. I'm gonna try to keep baling.

He did mention the teflon seals leaking in there as well. Question is, what is the brown particles plugging up the hydraulic filter so fast? He was guessing the clutch packs are coming apart and clogging the filter.

The stuff clogging your filter is most likely clutch material, with the problems you mentioned. It could be brakes as well, Have them check your parking brake while they are at it. They are not to bad to work at if you decide to do it yourself as cliff mentioned. Hamstn

Flex plate up front might cause brown particles also but not the other symptoms. Surprised they are going past the screen or not sure why they are so fine/small. Last two times I had a similar issues was the rear end in both cases. Check real close when you drain the rear for metal, the weakest point in these tractors.
